Speaking proper standard Mandarin will support you being understood, make you sound more professional—and educated.
My Curriculum
My curriculum and authentic materials give you a unique understanding of the Chinese language and culture. I design your curriculum according to your needs and interests. We will map out your needs and direction of learning during the discovery process and adjust accordingly throughout the learning process.
All materials include both Pinyin, to focus on pronunciation, and Chinese characters—allowing you to slowly becoming familiar with Chinese characters—and their construction. I point out interesting aspects of the writing system that give you insight into the deeper meaning and connections to a broader range of meanings and characters.

I apply natural language acquisition techniques and explain complexities of Chinese without added stress of complicated grammar. My dual culture mindset allows me to explain confusing language habits & best practices for communicating with the Chinese in simple terms.

Todd has been my Mandarin teacher for about three years. I began at zero having no knowledge of pinyin, tones, pronunciation, grammar, or characters. I am now working through a Chinese science-fiction young adult novel. [M]y pronunciation and tones are often much better than others I’ve practiced speaking/listening with, and my command of the grammar, characters, and vocabulary continues to grow at an accelerated rate. I’m extremely happy with my progress and have more desire to learn than when I started. There are a few points I really value from Todd’s teaching style and expertise. One, I signed up to learn Mandarin but I’m also learning Chinese culture. Two, Todd understands the challenges I face in learning Mandarin with English as my first language. The NSA (National Security Agency) assessed my Mandarin listening and Chinese reading skills using the Department of Defense DLPT5 (Defense Language Proficiency Test) and offered me a position as a Mandarin Chinese teacher.
I received a Superior level certification on the ACTFL Mandarin OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview). And I hold a Bachelor’s in language from a Chinese university and an M. Ed. from an American university.
